The terminal may prompt you to call, hold, or decline the customer's card. Even though, the authorization center may instruct you to keep the customer's card, do not keep the card. Your safety is our primary concern therefore keeping the customer's card is not advisable. Simply ask the customer if there is another from of payment that they would like to use. Then, instruct the customer to contact their payment card provider for any questions concerning their card.

Merchants are required to retain payment card documents for a maximum retention period of time, which varies depending on card type: MasterCard 18 months, Visa 13 months, Discover 3 years, American Express 2 years. These documents must be stored in an area that is secure.
